Update

Depression derailed all the walking, and good carbs don't change anything, but living at Garito Manor with its two meals a day in the dining room has really curtailed binging. Unfortunately, with depression keeping me from exercising, I've been gaining five pounds a month.

Just recently I've been trying to combat this by eating less which means skipping breakfast unless I'm hungry. (Again unfortunately, it seems that if I skip my breakfast oatmeal, the next night I end up going up the street to buy a Mexican sweet roll, well actually TWO Mexican sweet rolls.) Another tactic is to have a banana for dessert instead of ice cream or cake. This has generally been easy peasy. Today I left some of my lunch and will try to do this more often. Previously I've kept eating when full because I've been afraid I'd get hungry later.

Got a new GP in New Rochelle and catching up on all my required health checkups. My knee was hurting again. She suggested I see a sports doc about my knee, and yesterday I did. MRI next because I've probably got some torn cartiledge. Maybe I'll get to play tennis again afterall.

Back to Binging

Exit ketosis and, big surprise, back to binging. This week, for the first time this year I have been binging almost every day. I THINK I figured out why: because, typically, I can't control the carbs, so I immediately start gaining weight. After several weeks of this, I try to lose weight. How? Stop eating breakfast, fewer calories. Since that is the ONLY THING I DID DIFFERENTLY, it is clear as can be that my body simply chooses to binge on bad carbs as a way to compensate.

What to do? Well, for September I guess I'll try Gina's suggestion: since Garito Manor doesn't supply any good carbs, provide your own--make a pot of brown rice weekly and provide your own ww pasta--and substitute these for Garito's potatoes and pasta--because you NEED the calories. I'll also stick to plain ol' ice cream for dessert (not ready to give up dessert because life sucks and ice cream is something sweet).

Status of foot and knee--I ended foot rehab but will continue the daily exercises and the correct heel-toe walk. For the knee I began starting every elevator trip by pushing LL for lower level, from which I climb the stairs to go to the lobby and exit the building or go to the dining room. I'll also continue to try for at least an hour a day walking. I need to start going to a gym, but being a cheapskate I want to wait til mid-October so I can avoid the annual fee charged October 1

Happy 75th Birthday and Time to Exit Ketosis

A thorough examination of my heart at the Tisch Medical Center revealed that it's in great shape, but the long-awaited blood test revealed that my body can't handle the Ketosis high fat diet; my cholestorol levels require medication. (Also, by-the-way, the urinalysis showed only 'mild' ketones!!!)

This was a major disappointment but enough to make me unwilling to endure any longer the lack of strength/energy of low carbs. The cardiologist offhandedly suggested that I was out-of-breath because I'm out-of-shape. I really don't think so. Let's start eating carbs again...

and see if with more energy I can start an exercise regimen to get back to where I was before the broken knee.

My daughter says that, rather than diet, I should focus on why I binge. Complicated. However, I still suspect that living in an environment where regular meals are provided (as I have been doing since moving to NY), is the key. I think this removes a prime/major trigger: hunger. Hopefully, increased exercise (possible due to more carbs but also dependent upon working the the rehab) will reduce another trigger: depression.

So, let's see how August plays out...
